Crime Prevention

The Crime Prevention Unit provides information for and about the Amarillo Police Department to the news media MTD carand the general public.

Public education concerning crime issues is an important part of the police department’s overall response to crime in the community. A properly informed citizen will find it much easier to reduce his or her risk of becoming a victim of crime.

Public safety presentations cover a wide variety of topics and can be tailored to the needs of your group. The following is a partial list of safety and crime related presentations available: Women’s Personal Safety/Sexual Assault Awareness, Scam and Fraud Prevention, Workplace Violence Prevention, and Crime Prevention for the Home. We urge anyone to call with presentation needs that are not included in this list.

Another service offered by the Crime Prevention Unit is the Home Security Survey. An officer will inspect a citizen’s home and determine if it meets the requirements set out by the Texas Department of Insurance to receive a certificate that may entitle the homeowner to a reduction in their homeowner’s insurance.  The owner should contact their insurance agent to find out if their policy will allow them to qualify for what could be a 5% to 20% reduction. Regardless of the insurance reduction, the increased security will reduce the homeowner’s risk of becoming a victim of crime. Many homes qualify “as is”. Many others need only minor additions in order to qualify. We urge you to see our list of qualifications in the forms file or call our office for more information. This inspection is fast and free of charge.
