***Update 1/1/13*** From December 21st through New Year’s Eve night, APD officers working under this TxDot grant made eight (8) arrests for DUI, two (2) arrests for Possession of Marijuana and one (1) arrest for Possession of Meth. Four (4) of the DUI arrest occurred during New Year’s Eve celebrations between 10pm and 8am (1-1-13).
The Amarillo Police Department is taking steps to make this Christmas and New Year’s Holiday safe. The department has a traffic grant courtesy of the Texas Department of Transportation that allows extra officers to patrol and concentrate on impaired drivers, speeding drivers, and occupants of vehicles not wearing seat belts. The city has seen a big increase in traffic fatalities this year, especially in those involving impaired drivers. There have been 29 fatalities in 24 separate accidents. Ten of the accidents (42%) involved impaired drivers. Thirteen involved excessive speed on the part of one of the drivers, and seven of the fatalities were not wearing seat belts. Extra officers will be on duty to concentrate on these violations to prevent these numbers from increasing. The Texas Department of Transportation has a new slogan, “Holiday P.A.S.S.” (Persons Appointed to Stay Sober). Please do not drive after consuming alcohol and make sure that those who have been drinking have a Holiday P.A.S.S. Do not speed, wear your seat belt, and make sure children are seat belted or in a child safety seat. Enforcement will be strict!
